For Collectors

An interesting shift in print collection has taken place in the last ten years due to changes in printing methods. Offset lithography used to be the only game in town for the reproduction of art. The editions were huge because of the labor intensive press preparation. It would not have been cost effective otherwise. The cost of printing 2,000 pieces was almost the same as printing 1,000 pieces.

With the development of digital printing the quality of prints has improved tremendously. They can be printed on a variety of surfaces and papers that more closer resemble the support that the originals were created on. They are printed with six colors instead of the traditional four colors used in offset lithography . When you consider the bench marks of value….quality, rarity, and condition, the small editions and high quality of fine art prints make these prints quite valuable once the edition has sold out. Instead of editions in the thousands, now editions can run in the hundreds. Fewer prints…higher after market value.
The retail price of a fine art print is generally quite a bit higher than that of a lithograph because they are often printed one by one or in small editions. But because of their high quality and rarity, the after market value is much higher. This is great for collectors because if you own one print from a run of 250, you’ve got something valuable. It is also great for artists because they can bring their work to market without having to print thousands of pieces. Always make sure you get a certificate of authenticity with your print and make sure it stays with the print.
Dog art is very collectable right now. Ask any antique dealer and they will tell you, “if it’s got a dog on it…. buy it.”
